![]() ![]() I looked around on GitHub as well, for more information about Ableton integration, because I really prefer to use Ableton's built in instruments, effects and workflow. Komplete Start also comes with a small assortment of Guitar FX, but I discovered it's an absolute pain to try to use this MIDI controller with the Guitar FX software's god-awful UI, you have to manually map each CC knob per-preset, they don't do that for you. So I have this expensive MIDI controller that doesn't work well with my software, but I can only truly enjoy using it with a couple toy instruments from "Komplete Start" (which doesn't even include a piano instrument FFS!). ![]() I also emailed Native Instruments because the serial number for this keyboard is registered to somebody else, and they basically said that if the previous owner doesn't agree to release the Komplete Select 14 license, then they won't be able to help me. I did some researching, and I was shocked to find out that the only way to get this thing's CC knobs and stuff to work with Ableton is by using some abomination of a hack-a custom Ableton Instrument Rack that contains the Komplete Kontrol VST inside. The keys feel great, the hardware is awesome! Then I realized that none of the CC knobs, playback buttons, navigation buttons are doing anything. Then I finally saw the device in Ableton, and tried the keys out. Turns out this hardware doesn't support M1 architecture, so I have to run Ableton under Rosetta (wtf?) to be able to use my MIDI keyboard, which by the way, requires full access to my entire disk. Well, after I got a USB connection, I wasn't seeing it in Ableton. I did some Googling, downloaded everything I could, signed up for a NI account (more on that later) only to realize after an hour or two of troubleshooting that it's because I was using a USB 3.0 cable, and the thing only supports USB 2.0. Rant incoming.įirst, I realized my M1 Macbook Air isn't seeing this thing, like, at all. I was really happy to realize that my $100 purchase is now worth much more! I've repaired another 88 key piano on another occasion, so this was a pretty straightforward fix. The seller said it's broken, one key made no sound, and one other key can't reach full velocity. ![]() I purchased a Komplete Kontrol S88 MK1 on Facebook Marketplace for the equivalent of about $100 USD. However, at least you can control Instrument Racks and faders this way. Navigation buttons still do not work, and most of the shortcuts mentioned in the documentation are broken. MIDI In and Out ports are on hand for external hardware other than your computer, and the KeyLab is USB-powerable.I created this repository to help fix a lot of the issues I complained about below, but it doesn't solve every issue. In addition to expression and sustain pedal jacks, there’s a 1/8" breath-controller input. In our opinion, the Fatar-sourced hammer action skews a bit on the heavy side-pianists might consider this a plus-but can be lightened up via the 11 velocity curves. Aftertouch, which is also adjustable, had a wide sweet spot and was responsive to subtle changes in finger pressure. The key tops are textured, the keys sit tightly with no lateral wobble, and we just can’t over-emphasize that this action feels far more expensive than it is. The drum pads feel good enough that MPC purists just might not wrinkle their noses here. The Analog Lab instruments use the same sound engine as the full-priced versions, the difference being that they’re preset-based and you don’t get the full vintage-mockup interfaces you do with the full V Collection counterparts. #NATIVE INSTRUMENTS KOMPLETE KONTROL S88 REVIEWS FULL# Still, pretty much anything you’d want to tweak-oscillators, filters, envelopes, and more-is on hand and displayed onscreen in a pane that mirrors the KeyLab panel. We found that whether we ran Analog Lab standalone or hosted it in a DAW or MainStage, settings snapped instantly to their proper hardware control assignments even if we’d switched away from the Arturia instruments then back again. This is valuable, because if you want to run the UVI or Pianoteq pianos alongside them, you’ll need a host program Analog Lab itself can’t host them.įor live use, the music rack and/or laptop shelf extension attach positively to the back. #NATIVE INSTRUMENTS KOMPLETE KONTROL S88 REVIEWS FULL#. ![]()
